Collections are groups of provided events to display on your timeline. You can enable or disable different groups, but cannot (yet) edit them.
Periods are bigger picture descriptions of what you were doing over a longer period of time. They show up as colors on your timeline, and will show when hovering any associated squares. We create some default periods for you, but you can change and remove them freely.
Events are key moments in your life. They show up as individual squares on your timeline but don't affect the color or surrounding squares.

Customizing a collection will copy all of its events to your timeline, where you can then modify and remove them like normal events.
